How to speak to someone you don’t know
A lot of people find it comforting to talk in front of people who they simply don’t know. Some people find a difficult audience to be someone who they know because when the audience judge’s it is more hurtful when it comes from someone you know. For those who speak in front of others that they are not familiar with they give a better speaker. It is the notion that you don’t know these people and you could care less of what they think of you that motivates you to develop and deliver a good speech. You should find it a blessing to speak to someone who you have never met or know well.
The first thing that you are going to have to do to feel comfortable with the other person is to learn how to research them. You will need to research all of the things that you will need to know about the person. This means that you will want to learn their educational history, as well as, their past careers. This way you know what words you can use appropriately. You don’t want to get too technical if they aren’t use to the work jargon. You will also want to research any of their achievements so that you can try to bond with them.
That is before the talk, however, you need to learn how to work things into the introduction so that you can work in something that will bond the two of you, so that you can obtain and maintain their attention. You will want to think about speech tools like antidotes and jokes that you may want to use to break the ice. You will also want to think about using the shock factor and using the facts to deliver a strong front.
You will know what someone thinks about you before you even ask. In fact, if you read their body language you will be able to tell right away. It is very important that you learn how to approach the person. If you notice that they are getting tired of talking, you may want to give them a chance by asking them what they think. You may also want to pick up on cue signs. When you begin to drag things into tiny details, you will see it on their face; use their body signs as cues to move on to another topic.
There are lots of other tricks that you will use regardless of rather you know the person or not. The basis that you need to hit is you need to bond with the person right away. You need to sort of suck them into what you are about to say by finding something that they like or have achieved and making it into something that mutual respect can blossom from. The key is to stay calm before and during the entire presentation. You may need to keep a drink near you so that when you feel a tickle in your throat from being nervous you can take a drink of water. This will also calm you down. You will want to play around and find out what works for you and what doesn’t work for you. There are a lot of ways that you can keep your cool through out the speech or presentation, but you need to find what works for you.
When it comes to delivering the presentation, if you make any mistakes, they probably will not notice unless you bring it to their attention. When you make a mistake take it with stride and move on, don’t try to correct what you just said.
